Worship (an overview)
“I bring an offering of worship to my king
No one on Earth deserves the praises that I sing
Jesus may you receive the honor that you’re due
O Lord I bring an offering to you”
Offering, Paul Baloche
The Hebrew word for worship, in the Bible, is שחה ”Shachach”. It means to “bow down (literally fall down flat) in reverence”. This same word also means “to serve”. At Calvary, worship is more than singing songs and making music before the Lord. Our desire is for worship to be our lifestyle; an expression of what we were created for in everything we do. Why is this so important to us? The Bible gives us four reasons:
Worship Is A Command
"You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name. Deut 6:13
John 1:3 says, “All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being”. The foundations of the Universe are His. He is owed a proper response. That response is undivided, undistracted worship. He deserves it regardless of how we feel or how difficult our circumstances are. We pay duties and respect to men so that we may show ourselves honorable. How much more, then, should we bring an offering of worship to our King. The Bible says if we don’t praise Him, then the rocks and hills will cry out. Let your heart and soul praise Him, instead.
Worship Is A Privilege
But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1 Peter 2:9
Billions upon billions of people have inhabited this earth. His creation is so vast we can’t even imagine its borders. Yet, in the vastness of time and space God called...you. He has called you and chosen you to be “His Own Possession”. What a privilege to be called a “Child of God”. But privilege comes with a price. That price was the Blood of Jesus. He died on the Cross and rose from the grave so we...you...could share in this awesome privilege. Could we demand anything or find it in our own strength to earn this privilege ourselves? No. God didn’t have to send His only Son to suffer the Cross, but He did. Realizing this puts why we worship into much clearer perspective.
Worship Is An Opportunity
"Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us concerning His ways and that we may walk in His paths." Isa 2:3
The God of all creation desires to meet with us. He wants to teach us His ways so we may walk in His paths. Gathering together to worship is our opportunity to show gratitude, joy, love, and adoration to our God. Worship is our opportunity to lay aside the cares of the world and focus on what we were created for: to give praise and honor to our Lord. And though worship is all about Him, God desires to pour out His love and compassion upon His people. So, He invites us to “cast our cares upon Him” and lay our burdens and our tears before Him in worship so He may pour into us His peace, comfort, assurance, and guidance.
Worship Is A Gift To Bless The Heart Of God
“...because you humbled yourself before Me, tore your clothes and wept before Me, I truly have heard you," declares the LORD.” 2 Chron 34:27
Worship has but one pre-requisite for those who Love and fear Him: Obedience to come. We sometimes allow the cares of the world and the realization of our own failures to prevent us from coming into His presence. But although we may “put on our Sunday best”, our hearts are never hidden from Him. So, God calls us to come, just as we are, with no pretense. When our hearts are committed to worship Him in spite of the storms around us, He not only hears, he responds with healing, restoration, and peace that passes all understanding.
